'Peanut' chair designed by Marc Newson and made by Eckhard Reissig
Object No. 89/409
Marc Newson's 'Peanut chair' is formed from one continuous piece of laminated craftwood (medium density fibreboard). The chair has two deep fluid curves, one forming the back and the other forming the seat, giving it the appearance of curving back in on itself. In the late 1980s the manufacturer of Craftwood, Laminex Industries, commissioned 16 pieces of furniture which would demonstrate the versatility of Craftwood. The Newson designed Peanut chair was one of those commissions. The contiuous laminations of Craftwood were joined, bonded and cured in a jig. The form retains its shape and demonstrates the flexibility and strength of Craftwood used in this manner. Campbell Bickerstaff, Curator 2020
