Book 'Die Form Ohne Ornament' (Form without Ornament)

Object No. 89/1590

Counting Peter Behrens, Richard Riemerschmidt, Josef Maria Olbrich, Wiener Werkstätte and Josef Hoffmann among its founding members, the DWB was an association of German architects, designers and industrialists who supported new forms that demonstrated an understanding of materials and technologies in mass production and considered ornament indulgent and unnecessary. Die Form Ohne Ornament (Form without ornament) was published by the Deutscher Werkbund (DWB), the first in the series Bucher Der Form (Books on Form). The series contained critical essays and images of products that exemplified what the DWB considered examples of preeminent modern industrial design. The 1924 Forme ohne Ornament exhibition in Stuttgart put on display handcrafted, preindustrial alongside industrially manufactured designs. This exhibition exposed the various preoccupations of the DWB, including issues of standardization, economies of production, and the manufacture of aesthetically pleasing mass produced goods.
