Women's bandeau hat of roses

Close fitting bandeau hats such as this were popular styles to accompany elegant attire, complemented the often short and sleek hairstyles of the period. Bandeau hats were perched atop the head, and secured with a comb, looped wire pin or elastic. This hat features two large pink fabric rose blooms and rose buds plus foliage, giving the hat a romantic and feminine feel. Flowers were a popular addition to hats during the 1950s, similarly featuring heavily on printed fabrics and costume jewellery. This particular hat was owned and worn by the donor's mother-in-law, Marjorie Craig. The Museum holds a number objects originally owned by Mrs Craig, including her wedding dress and accessories from her marriage to Cyril Edward Craig at St Phillip's Church Hill, 18/10/1928. Most of Mrs Craig's clothing was made by a dress-maker and she is known to have attended many social functions. Mrs Craig undertook work for several charities, including the Sydney Day Nursery Association and the Sydney City Mission, and was a keen golfer. This well provenanced object is an excellent example of the style of hats worn during the 1950s to the early 1960s. The Museum holds a large collection of hats and millinery equipment. Through this collection we are able to explore the processes involved in making a wide range of hat styles, whilst documenting the stylistic changes in millinery from the early 19th century onwards. Hats as a fashion accessory saw their last major flourishing in the 1950s and early 1960s, at the time when this hat was made. During this period hats were seen as an essential component of the 'total look', and were considered to both complement and complete the outfit. By the 1960s hats were often seen as representing outdated attitudes towards femininity, particularly to young women who shunned the formality of the style. Of more focus were heightened hairstyles such as the beehive. (Grace) Marjorie Craig (nee Cook) was born at Hillgrove in the district of Armidale NSW, 17/9/1903. She was the fifth child (one daughter deceased) and fourth daughter. Her father was the Senior Constable of police at Hillgrove. The family lived in towns such as Grafton, Glen Innes, Albury and Newcastle during her childhood and teens, and she attended Newcastle High School. At the time of her marriage she lived with her parents in O'Sullivan Rd, Rose Bay, and her father was Superintendent of Police at North Sydney (retired). Marjorie undertook secretarial training but was required at home until her marriage. Marjorie was married to Cyril Edward Craig, a manufacturing chemist, on 18/10/1928 at St Philip's Church Hill. They lived first at Derby St, Vaucluse, where their two sons were born. They then moved to Rawson Rd, Rose Bay, in 1933. Cyril Craig died in 1977 and Marjorie lived on at her home in Rose Bay until her death, 1/8/1987, aged 84. Marjorie lived a full life, enjoying sailing, skiing and particularly golf, for which she won numerous trophies, and belonged to both 'The Lakes', and "Woollahra Park' golf clubs. She worked for several charities, including the Sydney Day Nursery Association, which she belonged to first in the 1930s, and, in later years, the Sydney City Mission. She also helped at Woollahra Senior Citizens, and was involved in various activities run by St Michael's Anglican Church, Vaucluse.
