Physical Description

Shawl, silk / wool, maker unknown, Scotland, c. 1840 Large rectangular shawl, twill weave with discontinuous supplementary weft. Plain cream central ground with deep border worked at upper and lower ends with a dense paisley design worked in reds, greens, blues and yellows, inner edges of the design 'feather out into the cream ground. Narrow borders worked at side edges with 'feathered' botehs extending into central ground, Fringed upper and lower edges.
