The Winthrop Company was set up by Sterling Products to make the active ingredients of pharmaceutical drugs when the United States of America was unable to obtain supplies of drugs from Germany during WW1

Sterling Products was an American pharmaceutical company, founded in West Virginia but in 1938 the company expanded overseas, and eventually operated about seventy plants in about forty countries.

The company expanded it's product lines by acquisition. This policy continued throughout the life of the organization. At least 130 companies were acquired directly or indirectly between 1902 and 1986
