Object No. 86/1287

This is a cardiac Pacemaker with a titanium case made in Australia in 1973 by Telectronics Pty Ltd. In the 1920s the Australian anaesthesiologist, Dr Mark Lidwill, of Sydney pioneered the use of an electronic shock to start the hearts of stillborn babies. In 1958 Sweden built the first portable cardiac pacemaker. It was bulky and had to be carried outside the body. By the 1980s, Australia was supplying almost 20 percent of the world's pacemakers.
