This is a Chinese New Year picture (nianhua). The New Year pictures were popular household decoration in China until the mid 20th century. Employing various elements of folk art and symbolism, these pictures expressed wishes for happiness, prosperity and good luck. The fish symbolises wealth and the peach is a symbol of longevity. Chubby babies are also popular.

Physical Description
Poster in portrait orientation and printed in colour. The picture is of a happy, little girl, seated astride the curved back of a large red fish. Over her shoulder she holds a large yellow bunch of grain. Around the base of the fish are round white peonie buds. The sytlised background is split in two horizontally with the bottom third blue and the top part red. A large round red sun is in the top right corner and stylised clouds float in front.
