This is a Chinese New Year picture (nianhua). The New Year pictures were popular household decoration in China until the mid 20th century. Employing various elements of folk art and symbolism, these pictures expressed wishes for happiness, prosperity and good luck. The fish symbolises wealth and the peach is a symbol of longevity. Chubby babies are also popular.

Physical Description

Poster in landscape orientation and printed in colour. The image is of a group of twelve, happy babies, seated on outdoor tiles, a garden in the background. They are bare chested and dressed only in nappies. The children hold stems of different types of flowers. A puppy, a kitten, chicks and doves are playing on the ground with the group. Above the image in red is the caption in Chinese characters.
