This is a Chinese New Year picture (nianhua). The New Year pictures were popular household decoration in China until the mid 20th century. Employing various elements of folk art and symbolism, these pictures expressed wishes for happiness, prosperity and good luck. The fish symbolises wealth and the peach is a symbol of longevity. Chubby babies are also popular.

Physical Description

Poster in portrait orientation, printed in colour. The image on the poster depicts a group of eight chubby babies playing with a pile of big green watermelons. In the foreground one baby is pushing a large watermelon while another is trying to pull it away. All the babies are smiling and happy. Above the image there are Chinese characters in red ink.
