Hive Wi-Fi security camera

Object No. 2014/79/1

Designed by Hive Labs and Tiller Design, the Hive Wi-Fi Security Camera offers the security of a traditional surveillance system, but with the ability to download video instantly and send it to a list of people via phone, text or social networks. The Hive Wi-Fi Security Camera is small, transportable, battery operated, and can be set up anywhere there is an existing Wi-Fi connection. The footage is stored on a cloud server and can be accessed using a mobile device. When the camera is activated, it sets off an alarm tone on your mobile device or sends a message to your nominated contacts. It also costs much less than traditional surveillance packages. This design object represents current themes in technology, most notably the Internet of Things. The HIVE is an early example of a product using this concept in that it utilises multiple platforms for communications and the user can edit content to tailor their usability. In this way it is an example of Australian innovation in design. This product won a Good Design Award from the Australian International Design Awards in 2013 and was displayed at the Powerhouse Museum from August 2013 - July 2014. --- Deborah Turnbull Assistant Curator, Design & Technology, 2014

PRODUCTION

Notes

This product was designed in Australia by HIVE labs and Tiller Design, and manufactured in China. The singular camera aesthetic is unique to its purpose of surveillance, which includes a digital layer; a software application that loads onto Mac and Android phones and tablets. Inside this software, you can build a social network that is aware of the space you are monitoring, and can assist in alerting you in the event of an emergency.

HISTORY

Notes

The Hive Wifi Security Camera was conceived by HIVE Labs and Tiller Design, and has won awards for both design and functionality. It is the sole product of HIVE labs, which exists to provide safety and security via social networking to their clients no matter where they are in the world. The camera and online system that supports it was inspired by the real life experiences of CEO Mark Richards. His home had been robbed for the third time when inspiration struck. The object was exhibited in the 2013 Australian International Design Awards at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. It also won a CES Innovation Award and was selected as an Innovations 2013 Design and Engineering Awards HONOREE in the Integrated Home Systems & Multi-Room Audio-Video product category. This is an award that only very few entrants receive in this competition, and so reflects excellence in both design and innovation. The Hive Security Camera was also a Finalist in the 2012 AWS Global Start-Up Challenge.
