'DIY Water Saver Kit' by Mania National

Object No. 2012/143/1

The components of this do-it-yourself water saving kit are quick and easy to install in most existing taps. These valves and aerators maintain good pressure but dramatically reduce the amount of water used. They can save around 16,000 litres of water and cut your energy and water bills by up to $250 each year. Saving water at home leaves more water in our waterways to sustain native plants and animals. They are a vital part of natural ecosystems that support us all. In 2006 Sydney Water was offering free Do-it-yourself (DIY) Water Saving Kits to enable householders to make taps and showers in their homes more water efficient. By February 2006, over 18 000 customers had collected their kits from authorised outlets. This product represents a technical response to continued drought, water restrictions and building sustainability development codes first implemented in New South Wales in 2005 requiring reduced domestic water use. It allows for retrofitting of existing devices to reduce water use while households transition to installing more water efficient appliances. This kind of domestic water conservation technology will become increasingly significant in Australia as growing urbanisation and large financial and environmental costs of new water storage infrastructure place unprecedented demands on water supplies.
