Postcard of Sir Charles Fitzroy former Governor of New South Wales (1846-1855)

Object No. 2013/23/53-70

This image is one of a number that were collated in an album between 1895 and 1920 by amateur collector F A Parle. The album contains numerous prints and photographs which relate to the early years of white settlement in Australia. Included among its contents are prints and sketches of early Sydney, material relating to early explorers like Hamilton Hume and Nicolas Baudin, a seven part panorama of Sydney from the North Shore and prints of all the early Australian Governors. As such it is a unique and significant collection relating to the early years after European settlement of Australia. The album is also part of the Royal Australian Historical Society (RAHS) collection which was donated to the Powerhouse Museum in 1981. The RAHS was formed in 1901 and is the oldest historical society in Australia. Many of the objects in this collection are of great significance to Australia and to New South Wales, some directly associated with people and families like the Marsdens, Henry Parkes, Douglas Mawson and John Verge, and some significant relics from Australia's history, such as convict handcuffs and the Ben Hall 'Wanted' poster. The importance of the entire RAHS collection and the way in which it was acquired adds to the significance of this object.
