HISTORY

Notes

Includes a black and white contact print showing Helen Homewood in a Phillipa Gowns at Embers Nightclub in Melbourne, 1960. The Embers Nightclub (formerly known as Claridges) on Toorak Road, South Yarra was an intimate environment where proprietor Jimmy Noel hosted leading American jazz musicians like Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Eckstine and Oscar Peterson, who performed with Ray Brown on brass and Ed Thigpen on drums. Australian musicians were also invited to perform in his venue, including pianist Peter (Chet) Clark who was engaged as the opener for many of these legendary American jazz artists' performances. Clement Meadmore's 'Michael Hirst' chairs were used as seating in this venue. Anne-Marie Van de Ven, Curator, August 2013.
