PRODUCTION

Notes

Photographs by Bruno Benini, some styling and props by Hazel Benini. Some of Bruno Benini's earliest fashion photographs were shot in Italy in 1958 when Benini photographed Italian model Carla Baldaracchi and Australian model Janice Wakely in modern summer frocks by Ninette of Melbourne and garments by Sportscraft and Crestknit. Benini places the models in various locations, including alongside the Trevi fountain, with the fountains of the Villa d'Este hillside garden in Tivoli, and above the orchestra pit of an elaborate operatic stage set inside the ancient Roman thermal Baths of Caracalla (built between AD 212 and 217).

HISTORY

Notes

Part of Benini archive acquired from Hazel Benini in 2009. Bruno's images capture the cosmopolitan lifestyle of inner-city Melbourne. The glamour of the fashion is accentuated by his locations, which included many of Melbourne's city streets and nightclubs. He also did several fashion shoots at the National Gallery of Victoria. Many of Bruno's photographs capture a powerful interplay between fashion and architecture. Bruno was inspired by the scale and crafted detail of architecture. The hard edges and retreating perspectives provided a dramatic background for the softer shapes and forms of fashion.
