HISTORY

Notes

Some of the negatives in this series were taken in The Embers Nightclub (formerly known as Claridges) on Toorak Road, South Yarra. In the intimate environment of this nightclub, proprietor Jimmy Noel hosted leading American jazz musicians like Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Eckstine and Oscar Peterson, who performed with Ray Brown on brass and Ed Thigpen on drums. Australian musicians were also invited to perform in his venue, including pianist Peter (Chet) Clark who was engaged as the opener for many of these legendary American jazz artists' performances. The musicians can be seen on stage. Clement Meadmore's 'Michael Hirst' chairs can also be viewed in the shots. Anne-Marie Van de Ven, Curator, August 2013. The glamour of the fashion is accentuated by his locations, which included many of Melbourne's city streets and nightclubs. He also did several fashion shoots at the National Gallery of Victoria.
