Summary

Physical Description

A large bound publication titled 'Sydney National Opera House' with a clear cover page and a number of design drawings and introductory pages secured with four metal pins down the spine. It is prefaced with the following statement by Jørn Utzon; 'I am happy that with this book[,] I am able to give the Premier, the Right Honourable J.J. Cahill, and the Opera House Committee a project which realises in a practical form the vision of the competition. After interesting and intense work with various specialists, we are convinced that the far seeing aspirations and efforts of the Committee sponsors and other supporters of the scheme[,] can be crystallised in a building which, in a functional, festive, and inspiring manner, will shelter the activities and the life within it, and in doing so enhance the face of Sydney'. This statement has been signed and dated by Jørn Utzon, march 1958. It contains 46 design drawings of the Sydney Opera House. The last page illustrating a design drawing is ripped and has detached from the spine of the publication. It is titled 'Sydney National Opera House Minor Hall Stage Machinery'. The back cover, which is orange has also detatched and only a remanent remains on the spine. A clear plastic cover page for the folio which has become detached. A plastic bag containing fragments of the original red paper back cover of the folio. The bag contains two larger fragments and several smaller fragments.

HISTORY

Notes

This first published concept presentation of Jørn Utzon's Sydney Opera House design is generally know as the Red Book. The title is inspired by the red background to Utzon's impressionistic sketches of the Opera House which are reproduced in the folio. The Red Book title distinguishes this folio from the 'Yellow Book' of 1962 (the cover of which features a yellow tint) in which Utzon set out the 'spherical solution' for the Opera House roof (2003/34/3-6).
