Born 1865. James Short was in charge of the astrographic telescope at Sydney Observatory's Red Hill Branch from July 1890. he was made permanent Astronomical Photographer in 1896 and remained there until his retirement in 1930. He died 1943.

Red Hill was a Sydney Observatory station in Pennant Hills until it closed in 1931.
Today the location of Red Hill Station is Observatory Park, Pennant Hills.
