Contraceptive Teaching Kit made by The Family Planning Association of New South Wales

Object No. 2008/60/1

Contraception has been a dilemma for humanity for as long as we have been aware of the biological process of conception. Methods of contraception have ranged from rituals and natural methods and preparations, to the quite physically intrusive. In Australia, conservative attitudes towards sexual issues prevailed until the 1960s when sexual health began to become an issue in public forums. The increase of awareness of STDs, particularly HIV/AIDS, and the knowledge of how to avoid infection resulted in mainstream campaigns, and better funding for organisations such as Family Planning NSW. The products in this collection illustrate that a primary target for sexual health education is young people. The material in this collection, originally procured for research during the production of the exhibition 'Taking Precautions', comes from Family Planning NSW, a non-profit, primarily state and federal government funded organisation that has existed for eighty years. In addition to seeing people in their centres around New South Wales, Family Planning also conducts health promotion programs, trains health professionals and undertakes research. The objects in this collection represent the various services that are/were provided by Family Planning NSW. The collection also illustrates the efforts made by Family Planning and NSW Health to promote realistic education about safe sexual practices. The kit was used by health professionals and educators in health centres, schools, and community resource centres in the mid to late 1990s. Damian McDonald January 2008

HISTORY

Notes

Family Planning NSW has been providing reproductive and sexual health services in New South Wales for 80 years. They are an independent, non-profit organisation responsible to a voluntary board of directors. The majority of funding comes from the Federal and NSW governments, as well as Area Health Services, private enterprise and research organisations. They also generate a significant portion of income through the sale of goods and services associated with reproductive and sexual health; such as this contraceptive education kit, sold through the Healthrites Bookshop arm of Family Planning NSW. This kit was purchased by the curator of the exhibition 'Taking Precautions' for research in 1995.
