Boardshorts made by Quicksilver

Object No. 2007/175/2

In 1970 Australian surfers Alan Grewen and John Law formed the company called Quicksilver. They saw a huge need for more comfortable clothing to wear whilst surfing and set about ripping apart old trunks and designing new ones. They had the simple goal to combine fashion and with that they revolutionised the boardshort for comfort when surfing. The design for these shorts was reproduced in 2002 by the Kitten clothing company, and printed on girls' t-shirts. These board shorts augment the Museum's small collection of clothing that shows how fashion has combined with function in sportswear. They were displayed in the 'Sport: more than heroes and legends' exhibition (September 2003 - July 2004) in the Powerhouse Museum. Written by Erika Dicker Assistant Curator, 2007.
