Pair of womens suede shoes by the Parker Shoe Company

Object No. 2007/102/1

This pair of suede shoes manufactured by the Parker Shoe Company, Melbourne exemplifies the most successful period of Australian shoemaking history before tariff reduction began to slowly strangle the Australian shoe manufacturing industry and imports took the place of Australian made shoes. The Parker Shoe Company was established by Malcolm Parker who manufactured high quality fashion shoes in Australia from 1930 until the late 1960s. Parker shoes receives a mention in a 1954 'The Sun' newspaper article detailing the 'simplified method of shopping' for shoes offered by the David Jones' Shoe Centre which took up the entire fourth floor of the Elizabeth Street store. The concept involved 15 distinct 'shops' where the display of 'every fashion of shoe' including Parker shoes was on offer. Very little information is available on the Parker Shoe Company, making the acquisition of these shoes particularly significant in terms of the preservation of Australia's material culture in the context of technology, manufacture, structure and function, and change over time.
