'Everything in between' poster by 3 Deep Design

Object No. 2007/71/1

3 Deep Design, is a Melbourne-based Australian graphic design studio with a reputation for uncompromising and innovative graphic design practice. It has a strong, ongoing commitment to bespoke (customized or made-to-order) publishing and design and a dedication to contemporary Australian design culture and professional graphic design practice. 3 Deep also relentlessly experiments with new materials and technology. Since it was established in 1996, has been the recipient of over 50 national and international design awards. The 'Everything in between' poster was produced to promote 3 Deep Design's 'Everything in between' series of Professional Design Workshops held in Melbourne during 2005. These workshops sought to challenge the conventional approach to design thinking and education, and consisted of workshops, talks and collaborations between students, recent graduates, and national and international creative thinkers. The poster aimed to communicate notions of play and deconstruction by building and layering ideas and performance. The design captures the hands on, energetic and craft-based nature of the workshops by featuring an imaginative set designed by 3 Deep which resembles an active workshop space. The poster's title, or strap line, cleverly weaves the 'in' from 'Everything in Between' into the words, 'everythingbetween'. Although based in Australia, 3 Deep Design also has representation overseas (in New York, Tokyo and Europe during 2006) where it assembles teams of writers, photographers, illustrators, fashion designers, artists, type foundries, architects and technical developers to realise complex projects within the new and rapidly changing, digital global environment. PRODUCTION

Notes

For the poster a series of photographic images were taken which traced dancer Fiona Cameron moving throughout the set, engaging with objects and spray painting back over the construction. The image selected for the poster was taken early in the sequence and selected because it captured 3 Deep's aspirations for the programme. 3 Deep Design was established in Melbourne in 1996 by Brett Phillips and David Roennfeldt. The studio has a strong, ongoing commitment to bespoke (customized or made-to-order) publishing and design, and a dedication to contemporary Australian design culture and profession graphic design practice. The studio's strong commitment to creativity, craftsmanship and design investigation, also includes the development of innovative, customised, hand-drawn typography design. 3 Deep has established an international reputation and been awarded over 50 national and international design awards. Although based in Australia, 3 Deep also has representation overseas (in New York, Tokyo and Europe for example during 2006) where it assembles teams of writers, photographers, illustrators, fashion designers, artists, type foundries, architects and technical developers to realise complex projects in a digital environment. To promote their Everything In Between workshops, 3 Deep Design created a poster that emphasised the hands-on, energetic and craft-based focus for their workshop series. Starting with a set designed to resemble a workshop space, a series of photos were taken of a dancer moving through the structure and spray-painting the walls. The image chosen for the poster was taken early in the sequence.
