The Airzone model 545 was designed and manufactured in Australia in 1934. This early mantel radio is one of the more compact and simple designs to come from this Australian manufacturer in this period. It was collected by the donor sometime in the middle of the last century, maintained in excellent condition and used. Airzone was a large and important radio manufacturer in New South Wales and the acquisition of this set greatly increases the research and exhibition potential of material produced by this manufacturer in the collection.

Radio receiver, Airzone model 545, wood / glass / electronic components, designed and made by Airzone, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 1934 Wooden mantle radio with speaker in centre, knob on either side of speaker, no needle dial. Right knob has pressed metal surround that reads 'Airzone / Volume'. Left knob has white metal surround, both knobs are black plastic with moulded flower design. Open back. Maker's sticker on back. 5-valve superhet.

In 1925 Airzone commenced manufacturing crystal sets. The company, like many other Australian electrical consumer item manufacturers, prospered after the introduction of tariffs in 1930. Airzone manufactured radios for other brands including Mullard, Malvern Star & Peal. By the late 1930s the company had become one of Australia's leading radio manufacturers. Airzone was originally located in Dalley Street, Sydney and later at 168-170 Parramatta Road, Auburn, Sydney & Camperdown.
HISTORY
Notes
This radio was collected between 1940 and the late 1960s when the donor was an active radio electronic engineer operating a business from home building and repairing radios. The donor accumulated a collection of radios, valves, radio journals and assorted electrical engineering material over a lifetime.
