'Shoe' sculpture by Vojislava Citakovic

Vojislava Citakovic is a Serbian ceramicist who graduated from the University of Arts in Belgrade in 2003. This sculptural shoe was made by her as part of a three-piece group (the other two objects were a ballet shoe and a boot) when she was still a student. It jump-started her career when it was awarded an Honourable Mention at the 2nd World Ceramics Biennale in Korea in 2003 (ceramics as expression category) . The shoe was subsequently selected for inclusion in the survey exhibition 'Serbian Contemporary Ceramics' organised by the Museum of Applied Art in Belgrade and shown at Sydney's Ceramic Art Gallery in 2005. The Powerhouse Museum acquired the shoe from this exhibition. When Citakovic made the shoe, she was inspired by the theatre and "imagined that the shoe was part of a theatrical costume rather than representing any specific period or fashion." *Today, she still concentrates on figurative ceramics but her approach, scale and subjects have changed: she now often makes narrative compositions inspired by pop culture and contemporary consumer society which focus on human figures and everyday objects and situations. Sculpture, 'Shoe', stoneware, made by Vojislava Citakovic, Serbia, 2001 An elongated women's high heeled shoe with closed toe, no ankle strap, chunky spike heel, in hand-modelled stoneware painted with metallic oxides mixed with translucent glaze in three colours: dark blue, yellow/orange and white; unpainted buff interior. Long and pointy toe part painted in blue, with five horizontal straps each in a different colour attached to both sides of the thin sole to hold middle part of foot in place; the pointed back at the heel extends down into the gently tapering high heel in yellow/orange. Prominent blisters (some open) within the glaze on toe and straps.

Notes
This shoe in painted stoneware was designed and made by Vojislava Citakovic in Belgrade in 2001. She hand-modelled the form, then painted it (when dry) with metal oxides combined with transparent glaze and fired it at a temperature of 1250 degrees Celsius. The prominent surface bubbles within the paint/glaze were an unexpected but welcome effect that occurred in the kiln .
HISTORY
Notes
This shoe sculpture was first displayed at the 2nd World Ceramics Biennale in Korea, 2003 , where it received honourable mention. It formed part of the 'Serbian Contemporary Ceramics' exhibition at Sydney's Ceramic Art Gallery (now defunct) in 2005 from which it was acquired for the Powerhouse Museum.
