Sandel radio made in Australia

The Sandel radio may have been manufactured in Otto Sandel's radio workshop for his Oxford Street store in the mid 1930s. Otto Sandel set up radio 2UW in 1925. Otto ran a radio retail sales and service shop at 248 Oxford St., Woollahra that sold 'Sandel' badged radios and radios manufactured by AWA among others.

Radio receiver, 'Sandel', timber / metal / Bakelite / electronic components, possibly designed and made by Otto Sandel for Sandel Radio, Woollahra, New South Wales, Australia, c. 1935 Upright wooden art deco radio with contrasting timber inlay vertical strip along each side of case. Five bar speaker grille above square frequency dial with metal needle. Three control knobs with intersecting triangle form below dial. Brown Bakelite moulding around dial reads 'Sandel'. Open back.

HISTORY

Notes

Otto Sandel set up radio 2UW in 1925. Otto also had a retail radio shop in Oxford Street, Woollahra and sold 'Sandel' badged radios that may have been designed and manufactured by Otto Sandel's own radio workshop. This radio was collected between the late 1940s and the late 1960s when the donor was an active radio electronic engineer operating a business from home building and repairing radios. The donor accumulated a collection of radios, valves, radio journals and assorted electrical engineering material over a lifetime.
