This modified Philips radio receiver demonstrates the donor's working transistor circuit design, their ability to adapt to new technology and its application to radio design. The new transistorised circuit was designed and built by David Hain and installed under old circuit chassis. This new circuit was integrated with the original speaker, tuning gang and volume controls.

Physical Description

Black Bakelite mantle radio with vertical white stripes on speaker grill fins, beige fabric covers the speaker. Frequency dial on top face of case has red backing and white needle. Two control knobs front lower left and right. Eveready battery. Maker's label in red paper on back cover.

Radio receiver originally designed and manufactured by Philips in 1947. Modified by David Hain to operate as electric cell powered portable transistor radio. New circuit designed and built by David Hain installed under old circuit chassis. New transistor circuit integrated with original speaker, tuning gang and volume controls.

HISTORY

Notes

This radio was collected between 1950 and the late 1960s when the donor was an active radio electronic engineer operating a business from home building and repairing radios. The old valve circuit has been removed and a transistorised radio circuit was built and installed by David Hain around 1970. The transistorised circuit is integrated with the old tuning and volume controls and the existing speaker. Modified by David Hain to operate as electric cell powered portable transistor radio. New circuit designed and built by David Hain installed under old circuit chassis. New transistor circuit integrated with original speaker, tuning gang and volume controls.
