Energizer 'Double Barrel' torch

This torch is one of a range of double barrel flashlights designed in 1996-1997 for the premium hand-held heavy duty market. Manufactured from machined aluminium and injection moulded plastic the torch has a unique external form which results from the two parallel rows of battery cells. The side by side barrels stop the flashlight from rolling and allow it to be carried in a belt holster and lie neatly along the leg. This torch is one of many products designed by Design Resource Australia in Crows Nest for the US-based Eveready Battery Company and Energizer Holdings Inc since 1989. Over this time Design Resource has created many flashlights, torches and lighting products for Eveready/Energizer - from 2-in-one lanterns to the recent versions of the Dolphin Torch. This double barrel flashlight received an Australian Design Award and the Powerhouse Museum Selection Award in 1997.

Physical Description
Hand-held barrel torch with aluminium and black plastic casing. The flashlight uses a halogen xenon bulb and can be powered by eight AA size batteries. Two black plastic battery caps screw into the end of the torch to secure batteries in place. Packaging consists of a plastic clamshell pack with colour printed cardboard insert and paper instruction leaflet.

Made in China 1998-2000. This torch is one of a range of double barrel flashlights designed by Design Resource Australia Pty Ltd for Eveready. The range consists of the large 8AA, medium 6AA and small 4AAA flashlights that were available with a number of anodised aluminium colour finishes. The flashlights were designed as a premium hand-held heavy duty product. They were manufactured from machined aluminium alloy and injection moulded Xenoy. The Xenoy alloy is a blend of semi-crystalline polyester (typically polybutylene terephthalate, PBT, or polyethylene terephthalate, PET) and polycarbonate (PC), and is a trademark of the GE (General Electric) Plastics. The principal function of this light is to provide quality beam and area lighting via a focus mechanism. High performance is provided via a phase 3 halogen gas lamp. The compact size of the lamp envelope enables it to be accurately positioned within the reflecting parabola and to take up a very small portion of the parabola surface. The parabola itself is computer designed to give a high quality spot and focus function. The focus of the beam can be changed from spot to flood with a twist of the flashlight head. This flashlight has a unique external form which is generated by using two rows of cells side by side. It is described as the double barrel flashlight and the unique form of the body causes it to have a natural anti-roll feature, be easily aligned in the hand particularly in the dark and the aluminium body incorporates a soft polyurethane grip pad on both sides of the barrel. The external form of this light is unique, has never been seen before in flashlight design. The side by side barrels also allow the flashlight when carried in a belt holster to lie neatly along the leg. The lens ring has raised ribs to ensure that gloved users find it easy to purchase and control the focusing operation. The ribs also extend forward to ensure that if the flashlight is stood upright on the lens when in the on-position, light will be seen around the lens ring thereby warning the user that it is switched on. The brief for this flashlight was to develop a premium range of lights able to compete in the professional end of the flashlight market. Lights in this category are used by police forces, security, operatives, paramilitary, ambulance officers and tradesman who require a long life quality reliable product. The product is designed to withstand heavy usage, occasional abuse and chemical and impact resistance. The product was launched in Las Vegas at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 1997 and won an award for the best product in its category. Notes
The flashlight has not been used. The Energizer Double Barrel flashlights were entered in the 1997-1998 Australian Design Awards and received an Australian Design Award and the Powerhouse Museum Selection in 1997. Examples of the Energizer Double Barrel flashlight were displayed in the exhibition 'Sydney designers unplugged: people, process, product' at the Powerhouse Museum in 2005.
