'Alpaca' by Yasuhisa Kohyama

Yasuhisa Kohyama (b. 1936) is an important ceramic artist whose work is informed by traditional techniques of historical potters from Shigaraki in Japan, his place of birth. He fires his ceramics in wood-fired kilns. Each firing takes about two weeks. He built and fired the work in an Anagama or dragon kiln during a period as an artist in residence at the Sturt Craft Centre in Mittagong, NSW in 2004. Although similar to work he produced in his studio in Japan, the colours and shapes are a legacy of the Mittagong experience and reflect his immersion in and appreciation of the local Australian landscape during his three month visit. Kohyama has exhibited widely all over the world and is represented in galleries in USA, Canada, the Netherlands, Japan and Australia.

Physical Description
A rounded, hollow stoneware artwork which has been wood-fired. It has a short open neck extending from one side at the top of the body and and two solid legs, one of which extends from the base of the rounded body. The piece is coloured from pale apricot at the base to deep brown and red at the top. Marked on base.

'Alpaca, 2004' was made by the Japanese ceramic artist Yasuhisa Kohyama (b. 1936). Kohyama is an important ceramic artist whose work is informed by traditional techniques of historical potters from Shigaraki in Japan, his place of birth. He fires his ceramics in wood-fired kilns. This ceramic was produced by Yasuhisa Kohyama when he worked as artist in residence at thr Sturt Craft Centre in Mittagong in 2004. 'Alpaca, 2004' was included in the exhibition 'Mittagong no Kaze' at The Ceramic Art Gallery, Paddington, Australia from the 2nd to 31st March 2005 which displayed the works made as part of his residency. Although similar to work he produced in his studio in Japan, the colours and shapes are a legacy of the Mittagong experience and reflect Kohyama's submersion in the local landscape and nature. He has exhibited widely all over the world and is represented in galleries in USA, Canada, The Netherlands, Japan and Australia.
