'Classique Collection' wastepaper bin by Design+Industry

This wastepaper bin was designed by Design + Industry in Balmain, NSW, 2003 and made by Snaith Industries in Revesby, NSW, in 2005. It is part of the Classique Collection range of plastic homeware products consisting of storage bins, laundry basket, clothes hamper and the wastepaper bin. The price, design features, functionality and visual appeal of these products were strategically targeted to compete against imported products in the domestic mass-consumer market. The range is distributed through retail outlets including Woolworths, Target, Big W and Kmart and is a rare example of a successful Australian designed and manufactured plastic mass-consumer product. The Classique Collection received an Australian Design Award in 2004. This wastepaper bin represents an example of the success of Design+Industry in using design to achieve cost reduction in manufacturing, which has enabled the range of products to be manufactured locally and compete with imported products. It also represents the group's recent expansion into designing homewares and furniture.

This wastepaper bin was designed by Design+Industry in Balmain, NSW, 2003 and moulded by Snaith Industries in Revesby, NSW, in 2005. It is part of the Classique Collection range of plastic homeware products consisting of storage bins, laundry basket, clothes hamper and the wastepaper bin. The Classique Collection range of products were designed to compete against imported products in the domestic mass consumer market. The price, design features, functionality and visual appeal were strategically targeted to this market. The range is distributed through retail outlets including Woolworths, Target, Big W and Kmart. The wastepaper bin and other products in the range are designed to nest together to minimise the stacking space required on pallets during transport. The visual form was designed to be highly aesthetically pleasing, enhancing the perceived value of the product at a competitive price.
HISTORY

This wastepaper bin was lent to the Museum for display in the exhibition 'Sydney designers unplugged: people, process, product' from 6 August - 9 October 2005. It has not been used. The Classique Collection received an Australian Design Award in 2004. Over 200 products were entered in the 2004 Australian Design Awards. The judging panel recommended 61 of these products receive an Australian Design Mark and 21 of these products for an Australian Design Award. The 21 products receiving the Australian Design Award were announced at a dinner and awards ceremony on 23rd April 2004 at Sydney Town Hall. Design+Industry was founded in 1987 by Murray Hunter. In 2005 it had a team of more than 35 designers and engineers and was the largest industrial design consulting group in Australia. From studios in Sydney and Melbourne, this group works on complex design and engineering projects, such as betting terminals and electronic funds transfer machines. Around 60% of its business is for clients outside Australia. In 2005 the group had begun to expand into designing furniture and homewares.
