Curta Type II mechanical calculator

Object No. 85/1693

Curt Herzstark designed the Curta hand-powered mechanical calculator while interned in a concentration camp, and production began in Liechtenstein in 1947. A beautifully engineered design classic, it has 605 parts. To enter the first number, the knobs are slid up or down to move horizontal gears into position. Then the crank is turned to enter the second number. The crank turns a stepped drum so it engages with the gears to add, subtract, multiply or divide the two numbers. This Type II Curta was made around 1960. Debbie Rudder
