Oscilloscope by Tektronix Guernsey Ltd

Oscilloscope by Tektronix Guernsey Ltd

Object No. 2007/168/1

This 1968 Tektronix oscilloscope provides an example of a much more versatile design than the 1963 Tektronix type 502A in the collection. This oscilloscope was used by the Commonwealth Acoustic Laboratories at Chatswood (the relevant department was later to be called the Ultrasonics Institute). The Ultrasonics Institute team were world leaders in the development of medical uses in ultrasound, commencing in 1959. This oscilloscope becomes not only a useful addition to the Museum's collection of scientific instruments but also as a tool used by important Australian innovators in health and medicine.

Summary

Object Statement

Oscilloscope, dual beam cathode ray, Type 547, with plug-in modules (3), metal / plastic / glass, made by Tektronix Guernsey Ltd, Channel Islands, 1968, used by the Ultrasonics Institute, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, probably 1968-1975

Physical Description

Oscilloscope, dual beam cathode ray, Type 547, with plug-in modules (3), metal / plastic / glass, made by Tektronix Guernsey Ltd, Channel Islands, 1968, used by the Ultrasonics Institute, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, probably 1968-1975 An oscilloscope (sometimes abbreviated CRO, for cathode-ray oscilloscope, or commonly just scope or O-scope) is a piece of electronic test equipment that allows signal voltages to be viewed, usually as a two-dimensional graph of one or more electrical potential differences (vertical axis) plotted as a function of time or of some other voltage (horizontal axis). The complete apparatus comprises a cathode ray tube which forms the measuring and indicating portion of the instrument, and a number of subsidiary units or circuits for providing suitable power supplies, for amplifying or attenuating the voltage to be measured, and for ensuring that the instantaneous values of that voltage are displayed on the screen in succession so that the trace takes the form of a graph in which the voltage is plotted against time. This unit operates in a differential mode, with a plotting frequency of 50 mHz (milli hertz). Included with the oscilloscope are 3 plug in modules 1x Type 547, four channel amplifier 1x Type Z, calibrated differential comparator 1x Type 1A1, dual trace And also one electrical test lead.

PRODUCTION

Notes

Tektronix is a United States corporation best known for its test and measurement equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and video and mobile test protocol equipment. The company traces its roots to the electronics revolution that immediately followed World War II. The company's founders C. Howard Vollum and Jack Murdock invented the world's first triggered oscilloscope in 1946, a significant technological breakthrough. Tektronix in Australia became NewTek Sales Pty Ltd in December 2001. NewTek no longer exists. The current representative of Tektronix in Australia is TekMark Australia Pty Ltd.

HISTORY

Notes

The Tektronix T547 oscilloscope was first manufactured in 1968, then selling for US$2350. This particular unit was used by the Ultrasonics Institute, Sydney, for monitoring electronic signals during the development of their Octoson ultrasonic scanner for foetal scanning.
