Notes

The design of jeans follows contemporary fashion trends and involves not only changes in style but also the fabric. This pair reflects the popularity of straight wide legged trousers in the 1970s and natural coloured denim. Later denims were to be acid washed, stone washed, distressed, bleached and patched. Amco jeans were one of the earliest Australian-made, owned and designed blue jeans. The brand was produced by the Vincent family, Mrs Amy Vincent and Mr George Vincent in their factories in Yennora and around Sydney, and by 1958 they were advertising a range of 'Boys' Rugged Jeans' (The Biz, pge 20, 26/3/1958. The company was originally called AMVIN, an abbreviation of Amy Vincent's name. Their son Cliff Vincent was also a pattern cutter in the family factory making shearers aprons, Over time the brand name evolved into AMVIn then AMYCo and then became AMCO. Family business E Hartman & P/L, owned by Rob Hartman and his father purchased the brand and factories organisation from US based listed company Blue Bell Inc (manufacturer of various brands including Wrangler) and incorporated a new company called Amco Hartman Pty Ltd on 1 Feb 1983. They sold the brand to Myer Department store group in May or June 1986. The jeans were made c.1965.
