Physical Description

Photographic prints (33), of Lawrence Hargrave's models in the Deutsches Museum, Munich, Deutsches Museum/Qantas, prior to 1945 - 1960 Hargrave donated these models to the Deutsches Museum in 1909, following his unsuccessful attempts to find an institution in Australia, England, USA and France who might take them. Most of the models were destroyed in the Allied bombing of Munich during World War II. Those that survived were transferred to the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences in 1960 and 1966. 22 of the photographs were taken by the Deutsches Museum. The other 11 are copy prints made by Qantas. On the reverse of the photographs supplied by the Deutsches Museum is a stamp (translation: Reproduction and other use only after prior agreement with the Photography Service of the Deutsches Museum), a photo number, a manuscript caption in German and a label giving the English translation of the caption. On the reverse of the photos supplied by Qantas is a Qantas stamp (Qantas photograph/ Acknowledgement appreciated), a photo number and a typed caption label. Where the model is now held by the Powerhouse Museum, the photos are also annotated with the Museum's registration number of the model.
