Stanwell Park is located 54 kilometres south of Sydney in the Illawarra region of New South Wales.  Stanwell Park and Stanwell Tops are the first settlements south of the Royal National Park.  Stanwell Park is famous for its connections with the early history of human flight.  The inventor of the box kite, Lawerence Hargrave moved to Hillcrest House at Stanwell Park in 1893.  His family owned extensive property in the Illawarra and Hargrave retired to Hillcrest House and continued to develop his theories on flight.  He carried out many experiments, particularly with box kites, on Bald Hill above Hillcrest House  Hargraves research played a vital part in the development of the aeroplane.
