Photographic print, black & white, portrait of Geoffrey Hargrave, Lawrence's son, in AIF uniform, 1914-15, copy print made c1977 Soon after the outbreak of WWI, Geoffrey enlisted in a mounted unit, but later transferred to the infantry as a machine gunner. At the beginning of 1915 he sailed for Egypt with the 2nd Australian Expeditionary Force (under the nickname 'Stirrups'), but was transferred again to the Dardanelles in the same year. It was here that Geoffrey was killed in action on May 25, 1915. Lawrence died less than 9 weeks later on 6 July. Geoffrey's mother, Margaret Hargrave, died 11 October 1915.
