Portrait of Lawrence Hargrave, his wife, their five children, family companion and governess. From left to right - Suzan Shephard (who lived with the family from 12 to 65 years of age, originally as a maid), Geoffrey Hargrave, Mrs Margaret Hargrave, (seated), Margaret Hargrave (standing at rear), Helen Anne "Nellie" Hargrave (standing at front), Lawrence Hargrave, governess (name unknown), Brenda Olive Hargrave (on governess's knee) and Hilda Hargrave. This photo was taken on the day of Hargrave's kite lift experiment, 12 November 1894.

Stanwell Park is located 54 kilometres south of Sydney in the Illawarra region of New South Wales.  Stanwell Park and Stanwell Tops are the first settlements south of the Royal National Park.  Stanwell Park is famous for its connections with the early history of human flight.  The inventor of the box kite, Lawerence Hargrave moved to Hillcrest House at Stanwell Park in 1893.  His family owned extensive property in the Illawarra and Hargrave retired to Hillcrest House and continued to develop his theories on flight.  He carried out many experiments, particularly with box kites, on Bald Hill above Hillcrest House  Hargraves research played a vital part in the development of the aeroplane.

Margaret Preston Hargrave, nee Johnson, wife of Lawrence Hargrave, born 27 March 1851, married 7 September 1878, died 11 October 1915.  She was the daughter of David Johnston and Charlotte Ogilvy Blake, both born in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Youngest daughter of Lawrence Hargrave and his wife Margaret Preston Hargrave nee Johnston, born 27 May 1893, died 1967. She married Maurice Charles Blackman and lived in UK.  The Hargraves had another daughter called Brenda (1890-1891).

Daughter of Lawrence Hargrave and his wife Margaret Preston Hargrave nee Johnston.  Born 17 April 1889 she married Robert Hudson and lived in Queensland.
