'1938 Day of mourning and protest' poster by Brenda Palma (nee Saunders)

This poster was created by Indigenous artist Brenda Palma (nee Saunders) who was involved in the campaign by the National Aboriginal History and Heritage Council to save the Australian Hall Building, which is the site of the first national conference of the Aborigines progressive Association called the 'Day of Mourning', held on the 26th January 1938. Members from many Aboriginal nations gathered for this conference to demand basic civil and citizenship rights. The poster celebrates the 60th anniversary of the 'Day of Mourning'. The main photograph featured in the poster includes the Koori people who were instrumental in organising the 'Day of Mourning'. From left to right they are: William Ferguson, Jack Kinchella, Helen Grosvenor, Selina Patten and Jack Patten.

Physical Description

Poster, printed in vertical format, white background with black text and black and white image. The poster is bordered with a simple black rectangular border. Located centrally on the poster is a black and white photographic image depicting participants of the Australian Aboriginal Day of Mourning, holding several signs saying 'Aborigines Conference Day of Mourning Aborigines Only', and 'Aborigines claim citizen rights'. Printed across the upper section of the work is the text '1938 Day of Mourning and Protest 60th Anniversary 26th January 1998'.
