Czechoslovakia knitting sampler

Object No. 2006/134/1

This cotton knitting sampler features 70 different patterns and was made in Czechoslovakia in 1876. For centuries, samplers have been used to identify and pass on knowledge of, and skill in, a range of different crafts such as knitting and needlework. Whenever books were rare or the ability to read was uncommon, samplers were often used as a teaching tool. In this way they often reflect valuable work and skills that might otherwise go undocumented. In particular, samplers represent the unsung work of women and their development of textile techniques such as knitting, sewing, lace making etc. Samplers were also used as a practice tool for children in institutions as well as at home, in order to perfect techniques under the assumption that 'practice makes perfect'. Many very fine examples survive, especially those that gained medals at the several international exhibitions of work which were popular in the 19th century. Little information about the maker of this sampler survives, other than the initials 'F M'.
