Amplifier, public address 'Raycophone' amplifier, for motion picture theatre, designed and manufactured by Raycophone, Sydney, Australia, 1929 - 1935

Raycophone Ltd, manufacturers of cinema sound systems, was situated at 62 Booth Street Annandale.  Raymond Cottam Allsop (1898-1972) radio pioneer and engineer developed the Raycophone sound projector in 1929.  Raycophone was acquired in 1930 by Harringtons Ltd which was taken over by Kodak (Australasia) Pty Ltd by 1933. By mid-1937, when the sound wiring of all 1,420 Australian cinemas was complete, 345 Raycophone systems had been installed.   Allsop remained a director and chief engineer, and continued research into stereo recording and reproduction.  The Raycophone company also produced domestic wireless receivers and developed sound recording and mixing technology.
