General Electric Company (GE) is an American multinational conglomerate incorporated in New York City and headquartered in Boston. General Electric was historically and primarily an electrical manufacturing and distribution company, formed through the 1892 merger of Edison General Electric Company of New York, and Thomson-Houston Electric Company of Massachusetts. In 1896, General Electric was one of the original 12 companies listed on the newly formed Dow Jones Industrial Average, where it remained a part of the index for 122 years, though not continuously. As of 2018, the company operates through the following segments: aviation, healthcare, power, renewable energy, digital industry, additive manufacturing, venture capital and finance and lighting. Given the current scale of the multinational, GE holds thousands trademarks and manufactures and operates worldwide.
