1950s Sunbeam Mixmaster Model 9B and attachments made by Cooper Engineering

This early 1950s Sunbeam Mixmaster was made in Sydney by Cooper Engineering Co. Pty Ltd. Since 1915 the Australian firm, Cooper Engineering, had been a subsidiary of the Sunbeam Corporation of Chicago, Illinois, but changed its name to the Sunbeam Corporation Ltd in 1953. Cooper were manufacturers of sheep shearing equipment, shower dips, fire fighters and home lighting plants. These continued to be sold under the Cooper name in Australia but from 1953 their electrical appliances, such as mixmasters and shavemasters, were sold under the Sunbeam Corporation Ltd name.

Physical Description

Food mixer, Sunbeam Mixmaster with blender, mincer power unit, and fruit juice attachments, electric, 10-speed, Model 9B, serial No. D034587, metal, made by Cooper Engineering Co Pty Ltd, New South Wales, Australia, early 1950s Heavy cast metal, 10-speed, electric food mixer which operated at 230-250 volts AC or DC, 50 cycles, 120 watts at high speed. It also includes optional attachments comprising a blender, fruit juice extractor bowl and reduction gear (power transfer unit) for powering a mincer. The blender comprises a squared glass container with a flexible black lid. It fitted onto the cast base with four grips while the metal rod was inserted in place of one of the beaters to operate it. The moulded opaque white glass juicer bowl features a central attachment hole for inserting on top of the mixer while a spout directed the juice into one of the mixing bowls sitting on the base. For this to be inserted and operated, the handle was turned to the side. The power unit for the mincer was also inserted into one of the beater holes and gripped the base. A mincer was then attached to it. Both the small and large mixing bowls, fruit juicer and mincer itself are not included. The base of the mixer is inset to contain a detachable plate which revolves. These held the mixing bowls. A stem is attached to the upper body by a hinge with a release switch. The curved handle above and back section of the engine cover are a black synthetic polymer material. The mixer has two chrome-plated beaters. The back section revolves to adjust the speed which are indicated by white-painted letters on the 'Mix finder dial' : Off 1 for adding dry ingredients Folding 2 Mashing potatoes 3 Mixing cookies and fruit cakes 4 Juicing citrus fruit 5 Whipping potatoes 6 Whipping cream 7 Beating uncooked icings and candy 8 Beating eggs - creaming butter and sugar 9 Beating cooked icings etc 10 Most attachments chopping slicing etc
