Prepared microscope slides in box

Object No. H9118

Eye of beetle, tongue of spider, proboscis of blowfly, a pig parasite, fossil diatoms and purple-stained anthrax bacteria are some of the biological specimens in this box of microscope slides from the late 1800s. There are also several micro-photographs of famous paintings, made by John Dancer, who invented micro-photography in 1839. This process only became really useful a century later, for storing documents on microfilm and sending secret messages as micro-dots. Debbie Rudder
