Physical Description
Mandolin, Ermelinda Silvestri, Catania, Italy [early 20th century] Mandolin with flattish curved back and decorative panel or scratch plate around soundhole featuring inlaid mother-of-pearl horseshoe and four-leaf clovers. A chequered pattern of dark and light woods edge the upper part of the body. Neck has 21 metal frets with the neck meeting the body at the 10th fret. Mother of pearl fret dots are inlayed in pairs into the front of fingerboard. Metal tuning machines with ivory heads on pegs. Back is marked with a rising sun in blonde wood on a dark brown background. Maker's label inside.
