(Part 1) Violin, purling top and back, brown varnish, 2 piece soundboard with grain narrow at centre and wide at edge, 2 piece back, with faint curl, ebony fingerboard, tuning pegs, black chinpiece, fine tuning knob on E-string. (Part 2) Case, old black, contoured top, handle broken off, green lining, compartment containing 1 ebony chinrest, 3 brown wooden tuning pegs. (Part 3) Bridge, ornate, honey coloured wood (Part 4) Fine tuner, brass (Part 5:6) Chinrests (2), metal/wood (Part 7:9) Tuning pegs (3), wood.

HISTORY
Notes
William Henry Dow, (c.1834-1928), arrived in Australia in 1855 working in Melbourne until his death in 1928. Although having woodworking skills he had no formal training as a violin maker. Official documents describe his occupation as patternmaker.
