Summary

Physical Description

Walking ensemble, women's, silk taffeta, unknown maker, [England], 1865-70 Tight fitting bodice (-1) with high neckline edged with a pleated stand up collar. Centre front opening with hook/eye closure and ornamental navy velvet, covered button trim. Bias cut bands of silk piped in navy extend from shoulder to waist. Sloping shoulder line with band of same trim across top of long fitted sleeve, set into piped seam. Mock cuff at wrist formed by bands of same trim and ornamental buttons. Bustle skirt, (-2) with hook/eye closure at right hand side. Centre front panel is flat across abdomen and trimmed with 5 chevrons of same trim and buttons, graduating from top, pocket at left hand side and watch pocket at waist. Skirt gathered at centre back for bustle. Separate peplum (-4) of same fabric, snap fastens to waistband of bodice. Edged with bias band. Two petticoats, one with tiers of organza (-5) and the other (-3) of cream rayon poult taffeta.
