'Sagasco' gas clothes iron
Object No. H5797
Gas powered irons were in use in Australia in the 1930s. They were internally heated by small gas jets and the supply of gas was brought to the iron by a flexible tube connected to the nearest gas point. Apparently, the tube as quite light and did not interfere with the ironing operation. The gas was regulated by a tap and the heat controlled to suit the article being ironed. Gas irons were cleaner and easier to use than those heated on the stove. After World War II and the increased availability of electricity, electric irons became more popular.
