Established in 1849, J.F. Shew is believed to have been in business until 1920. He was most well known for developing the popular side-strut designs, which were later copied by French makers. The company were located in Newman Street, London.

Cameras which are compact when folded. The lens and shutter are attached to a collapsible, light-tight bellows, and mounted on a hinged rigid bed which extends out from the camera body. When the camera is not in use, the lens, bed and bellows fold into the body.

Folding cameras

Cameras that used daguerreotype metal plates that were a quarter of the size of standard full plates, ie 3.25 x 4.25 inches.
