Physical Description
Upright pianoforte, rosewood/mahogany/silk/ivory/ebony, Holdernesse & Holdernesse, London, 1856-1880. Upright piano by Holdernesse & Holdernesse, London, veneered rosewood on a mahogany frame, the keyboard is supported by two front legs on casters, turned wood, hexagonal in shape. The front to the soundboard is divided into 3 panels, the centre of pleated pink silk and the side panels of pierced fretwork in foliate designs, backed with pink silk, with applied floral carvings between panels. Keyboard of ebony and ivory with a serpentine shaped, half-folding lid, veneered on both sides and featuring a folding music stand with brass turn catches and two elaborate candle stands with fretwork fronts. Features two wooden pedals, and a 6 1/2 octave range. A gilt printed paper label on the nameboard reads: "Patent Holdernesse & Holdernesse no. 444, New Oxford Street, London".

Notes
According to London trade directories although the Holdernesse name had been used in association with pianos since the early 1840s it was not until 1856 that the title Holdernesse and Holdernesse was used at the address described on this piano, 444 Oxford Street, London. The company appears at this address until about 1880.
