This iron was made in England by Jabez and John Whitehouse of Tipton. In 1865 J. Whitehouse, an iron founder of Tipton, Staffordshire, made improvements to box irons. In 1886 both John and Jabez Whitehouse took out a patent, No.323, for improvements to charcoal box irons. The Whitehouse family operated the Phoenix Foundry on Castle Street, Tipton, and produced cast-iron goods including this iron from the late 1800s until the early 1900s. John Whitehouse died in 1893.
