Summary
Physical Description
MOTIFS: Trailing floral motifs encorporating pomergranates, fern, oak and holly leaves with various flowers, shaped borders formed by leaf motifs, various decorative filling stitches. Hexagonal mesh ground of varying sizes. TECHNIQUES: Continuous Bobbin lace. The solid areas of the design are worked in cloth stich, using doubled threads on the worker bobbins. There is a single heavy grimp outling thread. The ground is standard tulle mesh, as in Cook & Stott, p. 14, which has also been uses on a smaller scale as a filling stitch in selected areas. Honeycomb mesh (Cook & Stott, p. 42) has been used as the main filling stitch in other areas, with an interesting variation. The shawl was made in sections and joined, approx every 15cm.
