Summary

Physical Description

Flying cap worn by Kingsford Smith. Leather fitting cap with chin strap and ear covers. Lined with cream fabric and lower quarter lined with fur. Section of exhaust manifold from the 'Southern Cross'. Painted black. Fuel pipe, metal tube with interwoven brass strands on outside with screw attachments at both ends. Steel bracket is attached to tube at one end. Used for interconnecting fuelling system used on 'Southern Cross' for the 1928 flight across the Pacific Ocean. Notes

The makers of the helmet and fuel pipes are unknown. The exhaust manifold was probably made by Fokker.

HISTORY

Notes

The flexible fuel pipes were used in conjunction with additional fuel tanks carried on the 'Southern Cross' for the long-distance flight from America to Australia in 1928. The helmet was worn by Charles Kingsford Smith.
